West Coast Dog Photography

Nestled in the heart of the Greater Vancouver Area, the Coquitlam River flows through a stunning landscape of old growth forests, making it the perfect backdrop for fine art photography. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing the essence of this breathtaking location alongside an extraordinary dog breed—the Dogue de Bordeaux.

This photo was a prime example of the lion energy his owner mentioned him having. As he naturally prowled over the river rocks along the Coquitlam River.

Dogue de Bordeaux

Joey, a stunning stud from Chilliwack, BC, embodies everything that makes the Dogue de Bordeaux an exceptional breed. They are also known as the French Mastiff, originated in France and is one of the oldest French dog breeds. Known for their calm demeanor and protective nature, these dogs have a remarkable ability to channel the spirit of a lion, as Joey’s owner shared. Their loyalty to family is unmatched, and it was evident in the way he interacted with her during our photoshoot. While this breed is known for its imposing stature, Joey displayed an incredible calmness that put everyone at ease. As we ventured into the lush surroundings of the Coquitlam River, I observed how he moved with a grace that belied his size. Joey was attentive to his owner, always checking in and ensuring she was nearby. It was as if he instinctively knew that his role was to protect her while also radiating a peaceful energy.

When Joey’s owner & I chatted about her vision, she showed me a photo of a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard I photographed; prowling down a hill. Thinking back on it, I believe this photo from my portfolio stuck out as it had the “prowling lion” energy she sees in Joey’s movement. This was one of the photos that finalized that vision for her.

Coquitlam River Fine Art

I noticed how Joey naturally posed himself amidst the towering trees and flowing river. All I needed to do was to guide his owner to lead him into the shot, and he would effortlessly find the perfect position. There was something majestic about the way he held himself, a true testament to the breed’s noble heritage. Throughout our time together, Joey’s protective instincts shone brightly. He was initially standoffish with me, which is typical for the breed, but as the session progressed, he began to warm up. This shift highlighted the Dogue de Bordeaux’s loyalty and deep familial bonds. It was a privilege to witness how his energy mirrored that of a lion—both powerful and regal, yet gentle with those he loves. The photographs we captured at the Coquitlam River not only showcased Joey’s stunning features but also highlighted the majestic beauty of the Greater Vancouver Area. The interplay of light filtering through the trees created a magical atmosphere that complemented Joey’s imposing yet calm presence. Working with Joey was an incredible experience that exemplified the unique traits of the Dogue de Bordeaux. This breed is intelligent and eager to please but can also be stubborn. I saw every bit of his personality & even through his stubbornness he was a dream. As we wrapped up our session, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore the Coquitlam River, capturing the beauty of both nature and this magnificent breed. If you’re ever in the Greater Vancouver Area, consider taking a trip to the Coquitlam River. You might just find inspiration in the old growth forests, much like I do. If you’d like to create art together, don’t hesitate to reach out. I would love to be apart of your story.
